Over 25 children will be at the hospice on the day, including children with life-threatening illnesses staying at the hospice for respite and children whose brother or sister has died from a life-threatening illness, who will be taking part in the Bereaved Sibling Sleepover happening that day.
Ada Nicodemou, who plays Leah Patterson on the show, said: “It’s great to take a break from a busy filming schedule and spend time with some very special kids. It gives us such a buzz just to see their faces light up and to be able to brighten their day.”
Very Special Kids is a unique Victorian organisation that improves the quality of life for families of children with life-threatening illnesses. Such illnesses include muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, genetic conditions, rare syndromes and cancer. Sadly, many of the children will not reach adulthood.
Focusing on the quality of life for the whole family, Very Special Kids provides practical and emotional support for the child, the parents and the siblings through a team of highly professional staff and a network of volunteers. Among the many services Very Special Kids offers, Very Special Kids’ House, Australia’s first hospice for children, offers respite and end-of-life care.
Very Special Kids Hospice Manager Gail Hessell said: “This is something the children will remember for a long time. We are thrilled that the cast members can take some time out to spend with our very special kids.”
